#19: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Starring: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

Plot: Archeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the US government to find the Ark of the Covenant, before the Nazis.

But is it any good?

In my opinion, the first 15 minutes of Raiders are brilliant. The weighty cobwebs, the subtle booby traps that suddenly change to a not-so-subtle massive rock chasing Harrison Ford through the tomb where he’s just purloined some golden treasure.

But from then on it’s a yawn-fest. First there’s the tiresome explanation in front of a blackboard of what the Ark is, then the plot descends into lots of leaping around with guns to loud music that gets louder every minute.

It’s always nice to see the evil Nazis get their come-uppance and Ford created a great hero in Indiana, but this simply doesn’t thrill me (aside from the first 15 minutes). And in the top 20? Come on!

IMDb’s rating: 8.7/10
My rating: Beginning = 10, after that = 3
