#26: Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain, Le (2001)
Starring: Audrey Tautou
Directed by: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Plot: Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love.
But is it any good?
Is Amelie a girl movie? I know a lot of girls who say it’s in their top five. I like it well enough, and it’s always a remarkable feat for a non-English language movie to burst into the mainstream and win over even the subtitle-phobic, but is it one of the greatest movies ever?
Well, some things make it great. The colourful Parisian setting and scenes are beautiful, and the script is clever and original. I love how random people’s likes and dislikes are revealed (and not “likes sewing” but “likes the sound of a cat lapping milk” or some such thing). It gives viewers and appreciation for the small things in life, and that’s a great achievement. But I must confess to finding Amelie as a character a little annoying. Some of her games just seemed silly. But yes, it’s a very nice movie.
IMDb’s rating: 8.6/10
My rating: 7.5/10
