Starring: Peter O’Toole, Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness
Directed by: David Lean
Plot: Epic rumination on a flamboyant and controversial British military figure and his conflicted loyalties during wartime service.
But is it any good?
I think we can all agree that Lawrence of Arabia is long. Very long. Four hours long, in fact. I am not claiming that any time is wasted or that its length is self-indulgent. It’s nice to cruise along through a movie for a change, and not be rushed through a 90-minute plot aimed squarely at the short attention-spanned.
Still, it is long, and after being wowed for the first half I found my attention wandering. It would return to the film for a bit, then wander off again. So I can’t say I was riveted for the entire thing, but I did admire the amazing desert shots and cinematography, and soaring instrumentals. It took me a few confused minutes to figure out that Alec Guinness was meant to be Arabic. Lawrence was a bit annoying at first but won me over.
I think that I loved snippets of this movie rather than the whole thing.
