#23: Memento (2000)

Starring: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Ann Moss
Directed by: Christopher Nolan

Plot: A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.

But is it any good?

Memento is: Daring, original, smart.

Memento isn’t: An easy viewing experience. It’s not a date movie. You’ll be scratching your head for days to come.

In case you didn’t already know, the story line goes backwards, so the end is at the beginning and vice-versa. To say more would be to type spoilers. The film certainly isn’t for everyone, but how many films are? It deserves to be firmly placed in IMDb’s top 25.

I’ve been a fan of Guy Pearce since his Mike-in-Neighbours days and knew he’d do well. Memento proves he’s a great actor. His role choices are brave ones and so he is yet to break into the Brad Pitt-type of Big Time - but is this a bad thing, if it means he gets to work in movies scripted by Nick Cave?

IMDb’s rating: 8.6/10
My rating: 8.5/10
