#41: Singin’ in the rain (1952)
Starring: Gene Kelly, Daniel O’Conner, Debbie Reynolds
Directed by: Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly
Plot: A silent film production company and cast make a difficult transition to sound.
But is it any good?
I’m not a fan of musicals, so it was unlikely that Singin’ in the Rain would win me over. It didn’t, although the diva star with the yucky voice trying to succeed in the world of ‘talkies’ was funny.
Of course, Gene Kelly splashing in the puddles and singing the title song is now iconic, and I have fond memories of my parents humming the tune on rainy days. The energy and dancing in the movie’s very impressive too, but everything else fell flat with me, especially the trippy song and dance number in the middle that goes on for way too long and made me wonder where in the plot I was. Overall I could’ve happily left this one on the shelf.
IMDb’s rating: 8.4/10
My rating: 5/10
