#48: Se7en (1995)

Starring: Morgen Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey
Directed by: David Fincher

Plot: Police drama about two cops, one new and one about to retire, who hunt a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his MO. He’s always one step a-head (ahem) of them.

But is it any good?

Ouch. Se7en is not for the delicate-natured. Gluttonous porker explodes over his table mid-forced binge, a corpselike skeleton who surely must be dead after being stuck in bed forever stinks to high heaven… it ain’t pretty, this movie.

Poor Morgen Freeman - he’s had a nasty life as a detective in an area crawling with trouble and just wants a bit of R&R before death. But first he must team up with rookie Brad Bitt and find the smart alec modelling his murders on the seven sins. And Brad Pitt’s lovely young wife Gwyneth is naturally a little uncomfortable living in a hellhole.

Bottom line: this film rocks. It put David Fincher on the film map (I’m ignoring Alien 3). It has a smart plot with a brilliant, horrible, brilliant finale. The movie also introduced Gwyneth Paltrow into the big leagues. It’s gritty, clever, always a step ahead without confusing you in the least. It’s everything a movie should be.

But if you’re more of a Sleepless in Seattle type… well, poor you! One of Fincher’s best, beaten only by Fight Club thus far. He does dark well - did he REALLY direct Paula Abdul music videos??

IMDb’s rating: 8.5/10
My rating: 10/10
