#53: Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Starring: Jennifer Connelly, Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto
Directed by: Darren Aronofsky

Plot The hopes and dreams of four ambitious people are shattered when their drug addictions begin spiraling out of control.

But is it any good?

Watch only the first half of Requiem for a Dream and you’ll be signing up for drug addiction classes. The sped-up sequences of shooting up, pill popping and coke snorting, all backed up by a pumping soundtrack, look awesome. Pupils dilate instantly. Blood rushes round the body. Happiness and confidence abound.

Watch the entire film and you’ll be rooted to the couch in a state of complete an utter despondency. The credits will roll, but you won’t be able to muster the energy to stop the DVD. You’ll sit there saying things like, “Jesus” and “Well, fuck me…” Because you’ve just finished watching one of the most intense films you’ll ever see. Definitely the most intense film about drug-taking and addiction. It’s a must-see for the acting, the visuals and the storyline, but be prepared to feel god-awful by the end of it.

IMDb’s rating: 8.4/10
