#54: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Starring: John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle etc
Directed by: Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones
Plot: King Arthur and his knights embark on a low-budget search for the Grail, encountering many very silly obstacles.
But is it any good?
The world would be a much sadder place without Monty Python. They may have struggled to raise funds and bickered amongst themselves in the cold and mud, but this film put them on the map, with its classic scenes of the Knights Who Say Ni, riders who bang coconuts to mimic horse gallops, and the killer bunny that isn’t as cute as it looks. It’s paved the way for comedy ever since, for better or worse.
Having said that, I find Life of Brian much, much funnier. It has more of a feature-length plot whereas Holy Grail is more a series of silly skits. I don’t roll on the floor laughing when I watch it, but I admire it for being the low-budget, original and silly film that it is.

My rating: 7.5/10
