#60: Alien (1979)

Starring: Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Tom Skerritt
Directed by: Ridley Scott

Plot:

But is it any good?

It’s a bit weird that I’ve already reviewed the sequel (which was at #85) and I basically summarised my feelings then about the first three films in the Alien…heptology, is it now?

While I still prefer the sequel Aliens, Alien was a ground-breaking sci-fi horror that doesn’t rush things - in fact, it’s quite slow and methodical at times but this builds up suspense and results in a bit more character development than many other movies that have imitated it since.

Yes, it’s dated and results in some unintentional laughs. But Alien is a classic and, even if sco fi’s not your favourite genre, see it for the alien-bursting-out-of-the-stomach scene.

My rating: 8/10
IMDb’s rating: 8.4/10
